Thyme “March”es On…

Our recent weather has been so unusually beautiful here, it has us soil lovers itching to get our hands in the dirt.  But we all know how March can be…In like a lion, out like a lamb (and you may even find a grizzly somewhere in the middle!)  This time of year, it’s hard to know which plants to plant, grow, and harvest because of our ever-shifting temperatures.  Thyme is an evergreen herb and is one of the first herbs to bloom, beginning in mid to late Spring.  It makes a great companion to blueberry bushes and perhaps by no coincidence, now is a perfect time to plant these too!  Since the best time to harvest most leafy herbs is just before they produce flowers, now is an ideal time to begin harvesting thyme leaves from your plants.  Because thyme’s anti-viral properties provide support and promote wellness, we include it in several of our dried herb blends, including our Herbal Tea Blend. Isn’t it amazing how thyme is perfect for picking right in the middle of cold and flu season?  Thyme is a multifaceted, power-packed herb!  Thymol, a compound found in thyme, has strong antimicrobial properties, and is commonly found in over-the-counter products such as mouthwasha and medicated body powder. At our house we love to use thyme in the kitchen.  It is an amazing addition to poultry dishes and breakfast meals, and a rockstar in hamburger patties.  Thyme is an extremely versatile culinary herb.  Just add a dash of thyme to complete any meal!

Until next thyme…

Jessica
